Will We Finally See A New White-Dial Speedmaster Professional Soon?

Last week, Omega hosted its Planet Omega event in New York and invited an impressive lineup of ambassadors, consisting of actors, athletes, models, and so on. Interestingly enough, actor Daniel Craig showed up wearing an Omega Speedmaster that misled numerous people. At first, it looked like the Canopus Gold Moonwatch, but upon closer inspection, it wasn’t.

A new white-dial Speedmaster Professional

First of all, the Canopus Gold Speedmaster Professional has a fully brushed bracelet. It also doesn’t have red printing on the dial like Craig’s watch did. The hands of Craig’s Speedmaster also appeared to be black, but that could be due to a reflection of some sort.

Funnily enough, in this article from this past August, I wrote, “As I’ve stated in other articles, I miss the days when Omega would please us Speedmaster enthusiasts with some variation on the Professional collection. I would love to see some (new) variations on the classic Speedmaster, and I wouldn’t mind adding a new white-dial version to my collection.” I also added a simple rendering (using my poor Photoshop skills) of a white-dial Speedmaster.

Teasing us with something new!

After carefully checking the first image of Daniel Craig and the supplied image that came later (see above), I was sure that this watch was going to be the next Speedmaster variant that we’ll see soon (I hope). Either that or Omega made some sort of custom watch for Daniel Craig. For certain clients, Omega is willing to do something special, but I like to believe that this appearance was a little teaser from the brand. The people who work there know that we look at these images and are aware that enthusiasts have eagle eyes for details.

My thoughts

The last (non-panda) white-dial Speedmaster Professional without a comic character (Snoopy from 2015), moonphase display (ref. 3575.20), or special reference (Alaska Project) was the Speedmaster Professional Albino from 1997. That watch was only for the Italian market and commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Speedmaster. The dial was not exactly white but a bit more off-white.

Having a white-dial Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch in the regular collection would make some enthusiasts and collectors incredibly happy (including me). That’s especially true if it is readily available and made of stainless steel. Some of you are guessing (I noticed in the comments on social media) that it might be in Canopus Gold or even in platinum, but I don’t believe this will be the case. Since there is already a Speedmaster Professional in white gold as well as a platinum version (with an onyx dial), it wouldn’t make sense to me for Omega to make another one in precious metal.

So I am assuming that it will be in steel with the steel bracelet, a sapphire crystal (due to the bracelet’s mix of brushed and polished links), and with caliber 3861 inside. Omega also might introduce a version with the Hesalite crystal and a fully brushed bracelet, but that also means that it would need a printed Omega logo. We’ll see…

Since Omega pulled this little teaser in November, the watch might be ready before the end of the year. Fingers crossed!
